Minimum Department Requirements

​Each fire department has different requirements for employment.

Candidates are only to apply to those Fire Departments which they meet, or plan to meet, the minimum requirements by time of interview and/or hire.  Please do not apply to a department if you do not plan on meeting all of their minimum requirements within this time frame.  If you have questions about the minimum requirements, please reach out to Jeff Dykes at the number provided on this page.

Oshkosh Fire Department does not have a residency requirement.

Chippewa Falls Fire and Emergency Services
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • High School Diploma or GED/HSED
  • State of Wisconsin Firefighter I or equivalent at time of hire.
  • State of Wisconsin Firefighter II within one year of hire.
  • Nationally Registered/State of Wisconsin licensed EMT-Basic -AND- be enrolled in an EMT-Paramedic class at the time of application -OR- Nationally Registered/State of WI licensed Paramedic.
  • Must be CPAT certified within one year of hire.
Live within a 45-minute response time of city limits within 18 months of hire date.Yes
Holmen Area Fire Dept
  • U.S. Citizen
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • High School Diploma or GED/HSED
  • State of Wisconsin Firefighter II or equivalent at time of hire
  • A minimum of Nationally Registered & State of WI EMT licensed
  • 15 semester hours of college level or certificate level curriculum courses preferred
  • Valid CPAT at time of hire

Menomonie Fire / Rescue
  • US Citizenship
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • High School Diploma or GED/HSED
  • Must be Firefighter I certified and a Nationally Registered or certified State of WI EMT currently enrolled in a paramedic program –OR– be Nationally Registered or State of WI EMT-Paramedic certified at time of hire with the requirement to attain Firefighter I and II certifications within one year after hire date
  • Valid CPAT certificate at date of hire

Wausau Fire Department
  • 18 years old
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • State of WI Firefighter I certified (or equivalent)
  • State of WI Firefighter II certified or agree to be within 1 year from date of hire
  • State of WI Driver Operator certified (preferred)
  • Nationally Registered or State of WI EMT
  • Nationally Registered or State of WI Paramedic (preferred)
  • CPAT certified at time of hire

Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • At least 18 years of age at time of hire
  • A valid CPAT certificate at time of hire
  • Possess a Valid Driver’s License
  • State of WI or Nationally Registered EMT-Basc at time of hire.
  • Firefighter I certified (WTCS Board or IFSAC Accredited) at time of hire.
  • Must be of good character and willing to be verified by a pre-appointment investigation
  • Any certifications or licenses referred to in the above subsections must be current at the time of application
